In 1933 Bert Bell and Lud
acquired the NFL’s economically weak Frankford Yellow Jackets
for $2500 and took the team to
Philadelphia
where it was renamed as Eagles. On 12th November 1933, this
reorganized team competed with Chicago Bears in Philadelphia’s
first Sunday game at Baker Bowl which wrapped up in a 3-3 tie.
Nothing is harder on your laurels than resting on them. This is
what Eagles did, they seized three NFL titles from 1948 to 1960
including two successive coronations in 1948 and 1949 under head
coach Earle “Greasy” Neale. The coach’s forceful crew featured
all the prospective Hall of Fame members like Pete Pihos, Chuck
Bednaik, Steve Van Buren. 1960’s is the most narrative decade of
the Eagles’. This was the decade when the team was booed,
decimated with injuries, went to the cellar, saw illusionarl
promises of the players, faced off-field chaos etc. By 1969,
Wolman, a former millionaire, was bankrupt and the franchise
went under the administration of a federal bankruptcy court. At
the end of the bankruptcy proceedings, the Eagles were sold to
Leonard Tose, the self-made trucking millionaire and original
member of the Happy Hundred.
The Eagles in their late 60’s produced title holders year
after year from Don Looney, Jack Ferrante,
Steve Van Buren
Clarence Peaks, and Cyril Pinder. In 1981, the Eagles
participated in Super Bowl XV with full buoyancy. They traveled
to New Orleans for Super Bowl XV and were considered to be heavy
favorites to knock off the nonentity Oakland Raiders, the first
wild card team to ever reach the Super Bowl. But the things
didn’t turn as they were anticipated. The Eagles lost 27-10 to
the Raiders. A twisting point of the game was when Raiders
linebacker Rod Martin intercepted a Ron Jaworski pass and
returned it for a touchdown. The incident when remembered still
leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of the Eagles’ fans.
The Eagles encountered a six-year final tournament
insufficiency which was lastly surmounted after qualifying for
the postseason four times from 1988 to 1992. During this stretch
they were coached by defensive ex- coordinator Buddy Ryan of
Chicago Bears. Under his commanding invigilation Eagles
developed their cutting offense centered on Randall Cunningham,
who went on to become an accomplished passer and one of the
greatest running quarterbacks in NFL history. Cunningham was the
Eagles' summit rusher each year from 1987 to 1990 and in 1990 he
threw for 30 touchdowns and rushed for supplementary 1000 yards.
Under head coach Ray Rhodes,
Philadelphia
took home Wild Card berths in the matches held in 1995 and 1996.
The Eagles authorization in the National Football League and
their schedule to play 4 regular seasons to be broadcasted
nationally at the primetime has caught the people’s vision.
Resurgence of the team would come under the leadership of
head coach Andy Reid in 1999 whose appointment was met with
considerable pessimism in
Philadelphia.
However with McNabb emerging as one of the game's great players,
the Eagles under the guidance of Reid won their first Eastern
Division title since 1988 in 2001. However, the Eagles fell in
the NFC Championship Game against the Rams in St. Louis, 29-24.
In 2005, the Eagles justified the hopes of their long-suffering
fan base by reaching fourth consecutive conference championship
game after defeating Michael Vick's much-hyped Atlanta Falcons,
27-10,
Charity begins at home and keeping this view under
consideration Philadelphia Eagles players are tremendously
benevolent as far their indigenous community is concerned. They
involve themselves in civic-related activities whether they are
busy with the football season or are on a vacation during the
off-season. However, the ecstasy was ephemeral. Two weeks later,
the Eagles were defeated by the New England Patriots, 24-21, in
Super Bowl XXXIX.
